Am I missing collagen?

70% of the skin and up to 80% of the body's connective tissue is made up of collagen.

After the age of 25, the body's own production of collagen declines and supplementation compensates for this loss and can help stimulate skin, hair, nails, bones, joints, tendons, organs and blood vessels.

It is believed that we lose collagen at a rate of 1.5% per year, which means a loss of collagen of up to 30% by the age of 45.

Can I cover my collagen needs through diet?

As such, most of what we consist of can be covered in our diet, including vitamins, minerals, fat and protein - including the protein collagen (a peptide), but it requires that you eat the right sources, enough of them and preferably every day.

If you want to focus on having an extra high content of collagen in your diet, you should eat foods such as: gelatine, stock/soup cooked from the skin and bones of cattle, poultry or fish, muscles/skins/tendons, poultry skin, the tough layer of the roast just above the fat layer, organs/ offal, minced meat where other than just the muscle meat is included. Pork rinds, cartilage and tendons in steaks are mostly made up of collagen. If you eat lean/cut meat and fish without skin, it is difficult to fulfil your collagen needs and cover for the natural loss everyone experiences with age, especially women after menopause. There are no plant sources of collagen.

A collagen study that measured the amount of the amino acid threonine in bovine and marine collagen showed that fish collagen contained twice as much threonine as bovine collagen.
