THE SCIENCE BEHIND MINERAL MAKEUP

Mineral makeup or the more current term “clean makeup” is trending like never before, as we grow increasingly concerned with health, beauty and wellness by influence from e.g. social media.

In this article you can learn all about what mineral makeup is about and how Youngblood both maintains clean formulas, without compromising performance. Mineral or clean makeup has more to do with what’s not on the ingredient list, than what is. Put on your lab coat and let’s dive into the ingredient list.

The Minerals in Mineral makeup [Titanium Dioxide & Iron Oxides]

One crucial mineral in makeup is Titanium Dioxide. What is Titanium Dioxide, you ask? It is the white pigment in makeup. Its function in formulas is to give you coverage. It has much higher opacity than Zinc Oxide, which is why it’s used as a primary white pigment in cosmetics. Some brands use this ingredient as a filler in their powder due to its low price and SPF protection. However, if you only added white pigment to formulas, then you’d be looking very chalky.

So, to add teint to those minerals, you add several other minerals called Iron Oxides. Iron Oxides are a mix of yellow, black, blue, red and green that when combined with the white titanium dioxide gives you the color you are looking for. Whether its foundation, where you’d typically be looking for an ivory, beige or brown shade, blush where you’d typically be for a rosy hue or eyeshadow that comes in all sorts of colors. It’s just a combination of these primary colors in different proportions that make the right shade when combined. A commonality with both Titanium Dioxide and Iron Oxides is that they are inert, safe metals that have reacted with Oxygen, altering their properties to impart color coverage.

Another benefit of titanium dioxide is that it also works like a physical barrier to UV radiation, offering both UVA & UVB protection. Both Titanium Dioxide and Iron Oxides are very inert substances, meaning that they don’t react with anything, and they also can’t penetrate skin. Even if swallowed they pose no risk at all to the human body and are considered safe as colorants for food.

Additional ingredients in mineral makeup

Another mineral found in E.g. Youngbloods Mineral Foundations and many other mineral products is Mica. Mica is a general term for 37 natural, earth derived silicate minerals with the function of 1) adding a subtle sheen to the skin, imparting a less chalky, dry appearance and 2) improving texture, so that the product feels silky to the touch.

These are the three main ingredients in e.g. Youngbloods Natural Loose Mineral Foundation. Simple, non-irritating, completely safe and pure.

With e.g. Lipsticks, it’s the very same minerals described above, as well as naturally derived oils and waxes that give the final product moisture, glide and body, so that the formula hydrates the lips and doesn’t break upon application. With pressed powders, there is also the addition of e.g. fractioned coconut oil, to bind the powder particles together, so that they can be pressed into their molds without falling apart.

So, what is Mineral or clean makeup at its core?

This is where the true nature of mineral makeup shows; it only includes the most essential ingredients and has removed a lot of unnecessary chemicals, that do not contribute to product performance or have skincare benefits. In fact, Youngblood has removed 1,400+ potentially unsafe and/or unregulated raw materials, making each formula clean, ethically sourced and of the highest quality. In addition to being pure, clean ingredients, the products have great skincare benefits with added vitamins, natural butters and plant extracts to care for the skin. Natural Loose Mineral Foundation is milled four times to impart extra smoothness and an even softer texture and high bendability. Many brands only mill their powders once or twice to reduce costs.

With Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics you really get crème dela crème, when it comes to clean makeup, that cares for the skin, with no compromise in performance. For over 25 years, long before anyone coined the term clean beauty, Youngblood was renowned for its pure quality. It’s the original clean beauty brand, if you will.
